It seems that scientists are just now finding out that part of being healthy is being happy... nope didn't see that one coming.

And get this, the study also showed that money doesn't get you happiness! To their credit, they make mention of the fact that this is kind of a "duh" statement. Though I found this particular part to be very interesting:
quote:
That money doesn't buy happiness isn't a theme you're likely see on a future episode of MythBusters. It's true. Once we are above the poverty line, money makes only a small contribution to our level of happiness. In fact, people who focus on the accumulation of wealth are actually more likely to be unhappy. Materialistic values are counter-productive as over time they heighten insecurity, which is one of the primary causes of unhappiness.

I think there's a little more to it than the article points out - like that big cheese burger sure would make me happy... but its not the healthiest option out there. But before I ramble on, what do you think?

That Tofu burger sure would make me healthy... but it's not the happiest option out there...

of course if I don't have any money I can't buy either burger...
or a Bowflex... and thus no buns-o-steel...

How can I be happy with buns-o-jello?

By the way...

I think you're right Anon , there is more to it than just the simple statement that money can't but happiness .

Ithink ultimately we all start out with the same 'appetites' , but just as you can make yourself 'like' cauliflower , we've chosen to let our palates become polluted .This is why some turn to Sony , Microsoft or even ...gasp.... Marshall to satisfy that hunger { just stirrin Axe , I know God plays a Marshall lol }.

We , as believers , know the only place we find our appetites truly satisfied , is when , they ,are driven by our Creator , not us , driven by our appetites . Matt 6 19 - 21 says it perfectly .

The really cool thing is , when we have this 'order' working in our lives , it doesn't matter if someone tries to disguise the cauliflower with a cheese sauce , we know , it's still cauliflower .

quote:
Your chances of beating the happiness road map are on a par to eating burgers for a decade and coming up clean on your next cholesterol check.

This is interesting , the choice is ours .

quote:
If you're still unconvinced and aren't going to make any lifestyle changes in the next year to shift your emotion set point to the left, there's only one thing to do. Pretend you're happy. Smile even if it hurts — the studies show that thinking you're happy can bring on the real thing.

What I find sad is , where do you see this displayed most ?

Close friendships and relationships are also important to happiness, with married people being happier than singles.

I do find it interesting that one of the key factors they found was the importance of fellowship. Wonder where I heard that before...

Hmm... and this one sounds familiar too...

To be honest with you, I think that there is an interesting dichotomy inherently displayed with this subject; We tend to think in terms of happy as in a personal satisfaction, as opposed to joy which is God's satisfaction, which I think Shred alluded to. Although I am all for happiness, God never promises happiness in Christ, but Joy in Christ. I think this is where the lines get blurred and misunderstandings and confusion results.

Or maybe because I don't have a yacht......

Good one Shred, I like that.

Axeman, that was where I ultimately wanted to go with this. There is the fleeting and fickle emotion that is happiness, and then there is the deeper state of joy. I may not always be happy with my job, but I certainly enjoy it.

C. S. Lewis wrote quite a bit on this. After work I'll dig up a couple of his papers.

Didn't he say something like , we mess around with sex & drink , like a child content to play with mud pies , because they've never tasted the real thing . Of course it was much more eloquent then that , but words to that affect .
While I think Joy is supreme , I also believe happiness has it's place in our lives , it's just the way they're prioritised that makes the difference .

Happiness certainly has it's place in our lives, but the reality of life tends to make that a fluctuating gratuity. Happiness has it's source in our wants and desires, but it ultimately doesn't last. Plus, reality needs to be fueled by other emotions, in my humble opinion. Besides, I also think that happiness is confused with contentment which shares similar qualities, but are not the same.

Ahhh...

That odd tension between contentment and seeking self-improvement...

Should I be happy where I am... or try to be better?
