This may or may not be appropriate to post here, but I think its worth making note of.

I am an avid reader of "User Friendly" - an online comic strip geared toward the "computer professional." Almost all the jokes are related to technology, its influence in our lives, and any politics that surround technology - normally, usually, generally (or as my old hardware instructor used to abbreviate: NUG) there wasn't much in the way of a political comment that wasn't tech related.

I went to check the site this morning and saw this comment in "The Daily Static" and I want to commend J.D. Frasier (aka: Illiad) for his stand. Its probably best that I simply put his words here:

THE CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION: I've had some mail recently asking me to comment on world events, in particular what's been going on in the Middle East. I've always been quite loathe to use the cartoon strip as a purely political soapbox; UF's focus is on technology, it's impact on society and what politics there are around it. I have of course made a few (less than ten for sure) particularly political jabs in the past in the strip, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Events like the one in Lebanon these days do affect us whether I comment on them or not. I always do have something to say about politics, but rather than introducing a steady diet of it in User Friendly -- something I really don't think I will ever do, so those of you who have asked for it, please stop asking -- I will from time to time write some editorial cartoons and post a link to them on the Static. "Outside the Box" seems an appropriate category.

So, Lebanon. It's a complicated matter, as is anything in the Middle East. I think, though, that some aspects, perhaps the most important ones, are the simplest of all. [link to comic]

I do offer sincere best wishes to all those who are suffering in this conflict.

I looked at the comic, and on the surface, Iliad has a point. But, even though pictures are worth a thousand words, some scenes can still be confusing gibberish. With all due respect to Iliad, it ain't that easy.

I have been following these events since BEFORE the war (and this IS a war, folks), with regard to Israel. To put it bluntly, Hezbullah (Y'know, that OTHER terrorist group, the one that attacked an American Marine Base in Beirut, killing 200 marines?) started it. Israel has been told by the world, time and time again, to compromise, cooperate, and use restraint when it comes to dealing with these fiends. Every time the Israelis give in to world pressure, the terrorists attack. The last time the Israelis gave in for the sake of "peace", was the Israelis pulling thier own citizens out of the Gaza Strip, so that the Palestinians would leave them alone. The result? 3 whole weeks of peace. Then the suicide/homocide bombers began anew.

The straw that broke the camel's back? Hezbullah fighters snuck into Israeli territory and kidnapped two soldiers, while Hezbullah fighters on the Egyptian side, crossed the border into Israel and killed several Israeli soldiers. Israel has had enough. It is high time the world observe the wrath of these warriors coming down hard on people who want nothing less than the absolute destruction of the Jewish race. And we are witnessing a serious smackdown.

I am sorry that there are going to be those innocents, on both sides of this, who will suffer. But let us be realistic. Emotional pleas do not bring peace. Victory does. If you were to take all of the weapons away from the terrorist organizations that exist in the world, what would we have? Peace. Conversely, if you took away all of Israel's weapons (and America's as well) what would we have? Holocaust.

Think about it.

"C'mon Dave, Gimme a break!"
