Here goes stupid question #308:
What is the difference between a bass amp and a guitar amp? (Besides the fact that one is for a bass and one is for a guitar.  )
Could I use a guitar amp with a bass? |

Even a little bass is way too much....lol!
Naw, that's not true. I actually prefer to hear Jay (JJ24:15 Bassist) in my monitors. His bass compliments my guitar sound. I've never understood why many guitar players don't like to hear the bass in their monitors. Must be an ego THANG...

Another thing - if you use a bass with a guitar amp, you could seriously damage the speaker. Underpowering an amp is very bad - because the speaker is not suited for bass reproduction, you could cause damage by trying to make bass sounds come out where a higher frequency is what was intended.
It's kinda like trying to put a semi in a 2 stall garage. You could do it - but why?

Makes sense. It was just one of those things that I'd always wondered about. I sat there looking at the website going
"Did they make two amps because its really better, or because they could get more money?"

Well...The answer is "sort of"...Technically, you 'could' use a bass through a guitar amp, and it won't hurt either the amp or the bass.But it's kind of like wearing shoes when you don't have any feet.It is not the most effective combination for either performances or good sound quality.The frequency range of the bass is really too low, and it is not meant for the higher frequency range of guitar amps.Both bass amps and guitar amps will recieve the incoming signals from both basses and guitars.But you really should utilize matched components (Bass guitar with bass amp)for the best sound quality and frequency response.

Well,mostly it is frequency range, response, and power requirements. Plus, the speaker size is vastly different. Have you ever noticed that most bass amps have larger speaker cones? When you hear about guitar players having "100 watt heads" that's nothing compared to the power requirements of bass amplification.
Consequently,because bass soundwaves are so long, they require more power to produce and sustain.However, bass frequencies penetrate and are heard easier.If you have ever stopped at a traffic light right next to someone who is booming rap music at ungodly levels, you'll know what I mean. They could have thier windows closed, you could have your windows closed, and all you will hear is BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!
There are more reasons, some that I am not sure that I understand myself. |
